The Quiet Gets Loud

The Quiet Gets Loud
There's something nobody really warns you about when you take this job.
It gets quiet out here. Really quiet. Just you, the road, the hum of the engine — maybe some music drifting in the background. And from the outside, that probably sounds peaceful. Maybe even enviable.
But after enough miles, that quiet starts filling up.
Thoughts you didn't have time for before start showing up uninvited. Conversations you wish had gone differently. Things waiting on you back home. Questions you're still turning over with no good answers. The longer you sit with it, the heavier it can feel.
That's the part people don't talk about much. Because from the outside, it just looks like driving.
Inside the cab, it's not always that simple.
Here's what I've noticed though — sitting there stewing doesn't fix anything. You're already upset. You're already in your head. And instead of doing something with it, you're just letting it build. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you think about it.
So do something with it.
Change what you're listening to. Find something that actually holds your attention — a podcast, a sermon, an audiobook, music that shifts your mood instead of matching it. Sometimes that's all it takes to break the cycle.
Call someone. Even just for a few minutes. You don't need a deep conversation — you just need a reminder that you're not the only one out here carrying something.
But be a little selective about who you call. We tend to have two modes out here — either we're venting everything, or we're not saying anything at all. And if you're already in a dark place, the wrong conversation can pull you deeper into it. Sometimes it's better to keep it light. Talk about something random. Something funny. Just pass the time together. That kind of simple connection can shift your whole mindset without dragging anyone down.
And if nobody's available? Talk anyway. Say it out loud. Get it out of your head and into the air. Keeping it all inside is what makes that quiet heavier than it has to be.
You're out here alone — but you're not alone in this. A lot of us are carrying the same kind of miles.
We just have to keep moving through it. One safe mile at a time.
